Atlanta Braves Trade Rumor: Braves Make Roster Move That Could Indicate Intention to Trade Marcell Ozuna or Sean Murphy

Update: 07/21/2025 at 1:05 PM.

The Braves DFA’d OF Stuart Fairchild and selected the contract of catcher Sandy Leon. The Braves now have three catchers on the big-league roster.

This could indicate they are planning to move Sean Murphy or Marcell Ozuna. If Ozuna were to be moved, the Braves would look to Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy to split time at catcher and DH. Either way, this would allow the Braves to have both in the lineup while also having a backup catcher in case of injury or late-game pinch-runners. If Murphy gets moved, the logic behind the call-up of Sandy Leon is even more obvious.

As noted in our previous update, Sean Murphy could be made available this offseason per Bob Nightengale. However, Murphy is the only bat of the three listed in that update that offers a big-time bat that is actually producing. Knowing the Braves are open to fielding offers on him this offseason could entice a contending team to make an offer RIGHT NOW that is too good for the Braves to refuse.

Bob Nightengale Reports Ozzie Albies and Michael Harris II Could be on Trading Block

Update: 07/21/2025 at 1:05 PM.

Bob Nightengale recently reported that Ozzie Albies, Sean Murphy, and Michael Harris II could be available via trade this offseason.

Update: 07/16/2025

The Braves DFA’s Petersen right before the All-Star Break. Tonight, they announced a deal with the Marlins in exchange for cash. Petersen has been optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville.

Update: 07/16/2025

Bob Nightengale Confirms Braves Will Make Veterans Ozuna and Iglesias Available at Trade Deadline.

Update: 07/15/2025

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale has confirmed that Atlanta will do what we all expected and list Marcell Ozuna and Raisel Iglesias for sale at the deadline. They are heavily used, and Ozuna is not in complete working condition. Needs TLC. The Braves are willing to take any prospects that will rank somewhere inside of their MLB Top 30, OBO.

Check out Talkin’ Tomahawk’s Alan Carpenter‘s article the Braves most likely to be traded at the deadline, in which he includes percentages and analysis. You might see some names you haven’t heard before. Alan thinks there could be a chance we see Pierce Johnson or Aaron Bummer dealt. Check out the piece and share your thoughts!

Ronald Acuna Jr. Trade Rumors

Update: 07/02/2025

MLB Network went wild with Ronald Acuna Jr. trade talks today. They were simply speculating about the possibility that the Braves could “kick the tires” on an Acuna trade. However, we do not agree with that at all. Read our entire write-up on the Acuna trade rumors and why the Braves should NOT trade their superstar.

Mark Bowman Suggests the Braves Could Make Ozzie Albies Available at the Deadline

Update: 06/10/2025

Mark Bowman pointed to Marcell Ozuna as the most likely player to be put on the block should the Braves continue to spiral out of control to the 2025 trade deadline. However, (more surprisingly), he also mentioned that they could make star second baseman Ozzie Albies available.

Ozzie is in the final guaranteed year of his seven-year deal.

Ozzie Albies Contract

  • 2019: $1,000,000
  • 2020: $370,370 (Pro-Rated for Covid-Shortened Season)
  • 2021: $3,000,000
  • 2022: $5,000,000
  • 2023: $7,000,000
  • 2024: $7,000,000
  • 2025: $7,000,000
  • 2026: $7,000,000 (Club Option)
  • 2027: $7,000,000 (Club Option)

Ozzie Albies is a three-time All-Star and has the most home runs by an Atlanta Braves second baseman in the history of the franchise. Albies’ 147 homers from the position dwarfs everyone else on the list. If you combine #2 Dan Uggla‘s 79 and #3 Marcus Giles‘ 72, they have just four more than Albies.

Albies has had a rough season so far, slashing .236/.314/.344. He has shown a tendency to be streaky over his career, but even still, $7,000,000 club options over the next two seasons sound like an excellent value for a player of his skill level.

Not to mention, he has a great relationship with star Ronald Acuna Jr.

Talkin’ Tomahawk’s Take: I’d be surprised if the Braves moved Albies at the deadline, but his name has been thrown out.

Atlanta Braves Trade Rumors: Why Marcell Ozuna Might be on the Block

06/06/2025

Marcell Ozuna is in the final year of his contract, and the Braves are in a tailspin. They have lost five straight series after being swept by the Diamondbacks in spectacularly terrible fashion. Should the Braves continue misplaying this through the All-Star break, they might be in the market to move the Big Bear to get something in return.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan listed Marcell Ozuna as the best bat available (should the Braves be in seller mode). Despite a hip tear, Ozuna leads the league with 41 walks. Despite the hip injury, he is still slashing .278/.426/.487. His wRC+ is a whopping 158.

If the Braves can get a return for Ozuna, it would also open up a spot in the lineup for Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy to get regular time by potentially slotting Baldwin into the DH. Baldwin is the only Braves player with a higher wRC+(159) than Ozuna.

The Braves still have time to get it together. They have the talent on offense, and the starting pitching has been excellent. Their recent performance has drawn some attention to who the Braves could put on the trade block if they continue. Let’s hope the Braves turn it around, and we have to talk about who they might be buying at the deadline, instead of selling.

Atlanta Braves Trade Rumors: Dylan Cease Back on the Block

12/14/2024

Dylan Cease is reportedly back on the trading block this off-season, according to the San Diego Union Tribune. The Braves were connected to trade talks surrounding Dylan Cease last season. We saw a similar pattern with Garrett Crochet and discovered the Braves were back in on him this off-season. Where there is smoke, there is fire, and the Braves are in the market for a frontline pitcher. Cease would provide a Max Fried-level replacement and much-needed relief for a risky Atlanta Braves rotation.

Atlanta Braves Trade Rumor: Braves Were Reportedly One of Five Finalists for Garrett Crochet Trade

The Braves were connected to Garrett Crochet last season and earlier this off-season. The rumors appear to have been true as Bob Nightengale reported that the Braves were one of the final five teams who made an offer to the White Sox for the left-handed starter.

Atlanta Braves Should Trade Jorge Soler to Detroit Tigers

Marcell Ozuna will make $16 million in 2025, making him an incredible value. Jorge Soler was a mid-season acquisition for Atlanta this year, but he’s still under contract for the next two seasons at $16 million per season, the same as Marcell Ozuna. Soler did what the Braves needed him to do after the trade. In fact, in his 104 career games with Atlanta, Soler has a phenomenal .868 OPS. With Ozuna likely entrenched in the DH spot and the possibility that Ronald Acuna Jr. may need to occupy that role as he works his way back from a torn MCL, Soler’s lack of defensive ability makes him a good candidate to be shopped.

Yardbarker has proposed that the Detroit Tigers might be a good fit for the power-hitting DH.

Atlanta Braves Could Trade for Garrett Crochet

The Braves were said to have inquired about a trade for Chicago White Sox left-handed starter Garrett Crochet during the regular season. It is believed that the White Sox will have a large trade market for Crochet this offseason. Crochet presents an opportunity to add a top-of-the-rotation strikeout arm as an alternative to signing an expensive free-agent starter. Steven Teal at HouseThatHankBuilt.com thinks the Braves trade deadline interest in Crochet will linger into the off-season.

Garrett Crochet Contract: Crochet has two years of arbitration left and earned just $800,000 in 2024.

Garrett Crochet 2024 Stats: 3.58 ERA, 146.0 IP, 209 SO, 33 BB, 1.07 WHIP

Crochet would cost a haul in prospects and/or players but he would offer two years of team control at a bargain price compared to turning to free agency.

2024 Atlanta Braves Trade Rumors

Stay tuned to this page for updated trade rumor breakdowns and our opinions on whether the rumor will become reality or remain a rhetorical rumbling, like a gas bubble about to become a fart in Bartolo Colon‘s belly.

Atlanta Braves Trade Rumors: SP, Tyler Glasnow, Tampa Bay Rays

Atlanta Braves Trade Rumors: SP, Dylan Cease, Chicago White Sox

Talkin’ Tomahawk’s Take on Dylan Cease Trade Rumors: The Atlanta Braves would seem like a great fit for the talented starting pitcher on the surface, but a deeper look might present a different story. Dylan Cease has two years of team control remaining on his deal. Two years ago he finished second in Cy Young voting. Outside of that one season, he has posted a 4.46 ERA over 474 career innings. On top of that, the Braves have a long-term need at SP and Cease will be a two-year rental. Like we’ve seen with Sean Murphy and Matt Olson, Alex Anthopoulos isn’t afraid to trade and get an extension done. Cease is a Scott Boras client and assuredly won’t be interested in signing an extension with two years left to increase his value. Prediction: Braves won’t trade for Dylan Cease.

Atlanta Braves Trade Rumors: Braves Plan to Flip Marco Gonzales in Another Deal?

Talkin’ Tomahawk’s Take on Trading Gonzales Away: Marco Gonzales is a quality mid-rotation pitcher the Braves could really use in the stable in 2024. He came over as the most expensive part of the Jarred Kelenic trade. The Mariners are paying a chunk of his salary as a part of the deal and his AAV only counts as $7.5 million against the luxury tax payroll. On top of the fact that Gonzales meets a need for the Braves, Alex Anthopoulos doesn’t let information leak about his pending trades… which kind of makes this entire article useless. Prediction: Braves will keep Gonzales.
UPDATE: Got this one wrong!

Atlanta Braves Trade Rumors: Braves Could Trade Marcell Ozuna, Raisel Iglesias, or Both

Marcell Ozuna and Raisel Iglesias‘ names have been swirling about in the trade winds. The reason? These two guys are worth $16 million each against the competitive balance tax threshold. If the Braves are going to make a splashy deal or add a lot of payroll to the books, they will likely need to make some space. If you’d like to see a breakdown of where the Braves stand with their payroll and luxury taxes, click here. The point is, they aren’t in a position to add a bunch of payroll or they will cross the second tier of taxes and incur even more harsh penalties. If they move one or both of these guys, it can accommodate a bigger move.

Why Ozuna and Iglesias? These might be the most expendable high-dollar contracts the team has on the roster. The bullpen is done of the deepest in baseball and Ozuna has been hit or miss at DH, depending on the year. He doesn’t contribute defensively and the offense could withstand a potential downgrade if it meant an real upgrade to starting pitching.

Talkin’ Tomahawk’s Take on Trading Ozuna or Iglesias: I think this is a real possibility if the Braves are actually in on some of these big-named pitchers we keep hearing about. I don’t think they are willing to add another huge chunk of money and go deep into the second tier of the luxury tax. In order to make room, these are the guys that will have to go. That being said, I think the Braves are pretty happy with the team the way it is. Next season, they have a lot of money falling off the books and will have a chance to get out of the luxury tax penalty for a third-straight year (which resets the club and reduces the penalty the next time cross the threshold). That should give AA the opportunity he needs to add long-term pieces. This year’s rotation doesn’t look so bad. You have your top three studs, Reynaldo Lopez, Marco Gonzales, and young guys like AJ Smith-Sawver, Hurston Waldrep, Darius Vines, and Bryce Elder. Don’t forget, Ian Anderson and Huascar Ynoa should be making their glorious returns. I say we keep Ozuna and Iglesias.

Conclusion – Don’t Listen to Anything You Hear

Remember, Alex Anthopoulos keeps his cards close to the vest. When is the last time you remember hearing rumors about a deal he actually ended up making? I leave you with this quote from AA:

“I think the only thing I’ve been consistent with — not all the time, but for the most part — the majority of the stuff that we do does not leak,” Anthopoulos said. “The majority of the guys that we’re interested in don’t leak.”

Alex Anthopoulos
