After last night’s 6-1 loss to the Dodgers, the Braves have officially begun the season with a five-game losing streak. This is the fourth five-game losing streak since 2021 for the Braves.

This is not good. In fact, many of the team’s offensive statistics are buried at the bottom of the league. But that should be expected during a five-game losing streak.

Does this feel worse because it’s happening at the start of the season, coinciding with Jurickson Profar‘s 80-game suspension (which includes any potential Postseason games) and Reynaldo López being sent to the 15-Day IL?

Possibly.

If this happened in the middle of the season, would we notice? Absolutely! But would it mean the Braves’ season is over? Not necessarily.

How many times did the Braves have a five-game losing streak in 2024?

Three times. The Braves lost five in a row from 06/07-06/12. All of the games were on the road @ WSH and BAL. The next two five-game skids were a part of two separate six-game losing streaks. The Braves still won 89 games and finished 2nd in the NL East, making the Postseason.

How many times did the Braves have a five-game losing streak in 2023?

The Braves had no five-game losing streaks in 2023. I suppose it’s hard to lose five in a row when the MVP is healthy and at the top of the lineup all year long! The Braves won 104 games and finished first in the NL East

How many times did the Braves have a five-game losing streak in 2022?

Zero. The Braves finished first in the NL East while winning 101 games in 2022.

How many times did the Braves have a five-game losing streak in 2021?

They did not. Despite being under .500 at the All-Star Break, Atlanta still never had a five-game losing streak in their World Championship season.

So, the takeaway here is that a five-game losing streak is certainly a bad omen for winning the division. The offense is frustratingly anemic, and it’s loaded with streaky players or players with a track record of being below-average hitters, like Orlando Arcia (Career 78 OPS+), Bryan De La Cruz (Career 89 OPS+), and Jarred Kelenic (Career 86 OPS+)

Let’s hope this losing streak stops tonight as the Braves send Chris Sale to the mound to take on Dustin May.
