The Gwinnett Stripers couldn’t crack the Indianapolis Indians’ pitching staff on Thursday night, falling 3–0 at Victory Field.

Bubba Chandler set the tone early, spinning six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and just five hits allowed. He worked around scattered traffic, holding Gwinnett to an 0-for-4 mark with runners in scoring position.

Indianapolis did all its damage in the third. Alika Williams led off with a double, and Ji Hwan Bae followed with a sharp RBI triple. Bae later scored on a fielding error to put the Indians up 2–0.

The Stripers threatened again in the seventh when Matthew Batten walked and Jason Delay singled, but center fielder Billy Cook threw out Batten trying to take third.

Ronny Simon added insurance in the seventh with a solo homer off Rolddy Muñoz, his seventh long ball of the season.

Hurston Waldrep, the Braves’ No. 2 prospect, took the loss despite a strong start: six innings, four hits, and just one earned run. He leaned heavily on his slider and splitter to keep Indianapolis off balance.

Gwinnett managed only six singles on the night, with Jarred Kelenic going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. Conner Capel collected a hit and his ninth stolen base.

The Indians’ bullpen trio of Eddy Yean, Cam Sanders, and Kyle Nicolas combined to retire nine of the final ten hitters to secure the shutout.

Analysis:

While Gwinnett came up empty at the plate, Hurston Waldrep’s outing offered one of the more encouraging signs of the night. Over six innings, the Braves’ No. 2 prospect held Indianapolis to just one earned run on four hits while striking out six, lowering his ERA to 4.97.

Even that number undersells his recent progress; removing his June 8 meltdown in which he allowed six earned runs while recording only one out, Waldrep would own a 4.31 ERA across 79 1/3 innings. With back-to-back quality starts and improved efficiency, he’s putting himself in position for a potential big-league look later this summer, especially with Atlanta’s rotation depth in question.

Pitching Lines:

  • Bubba Chandler (W, 4–2): 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K
  • Hurston Waldrep (L, 6–8): 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R (1 ER), 2 BB, 6 K
  • Kyle Nicolas (S, 3): 1 IP, 0 H, 2 K

The Stripers are now 36-54 and in sole possession of 10th and last place in the INT West.

Gwinnett (36–54) will look to bounce back in Game 2 of the series Friday night in Indianapolis.
