Veteran reliever Jesse Chavez made his first start of the 2025 season Wednesday night in Gwinnett, tossing three scoreless innings for the Stripers in Game 2 of a doubleheader against Jacksonville.

The 41-year-old Chavez, beloved by Braves fans, turned in a clean outing despite the Stripers falling 1-0. It marked the second start of his Gwinnett career and his first since September 2023.

Chavez was sharp, logging 3.0 innings without allowing an earned run, and was followed by a string of clean relief appearances from Jhancarlos Lara, Kevin Herget, Enoli Paredes, and Craig Kimbrel. While Gwinnett’s pitching kept the Jumbo Shrimp off the board in terms of earned runs, the game’s only score came via an error at third base.

Unfortunately, the Stripers’ offense didn’t offer much support. Gwinnett was held to just three hits across both games, getting shut out 8-0 in Game 1 and 1-0 in Game 2. The lone hit in the opener came off the bat of Jonathan Ornelas, making his Stripers debut.

The two losses drop Gwinnett to 2-6 in doubleheaders and extend their scoreless streak to 22 innings, dating back to Sunday’s first inning in Louisville.

What’s Next for Gwinnett Stripers

The Stripers return to Coolray Field on Thursday night to wrap up the series against Jacksonville. RHP Nathan Wiles (1-4, 2.68 ERA) will take the mound for Gwinnett, while the Jumbo Shrimp send out RHP Adam Mazur (2-4, 3.68 ERA).
