While the Atlanta Braves took care of business in their home opener against the Miami Marlins on Friday night, they also had a lot going on at Coolray Field to pay attention to. Superstar pitcher Spencer Strider took the mound for the Gwinnett Stripers in his second rehab start, and the results were encouraging, to say the least.

Strider shut the Nashville Sounds down over 5.1 no-hit innings before getting lifted from the game after 75 pitches. He allowed two walks and struck out eight hitters in the start.

Strider’s fastball averaged 95.9 mph and topped out at 97.7 mph. He threw his 4-seam fastball 56% of the time and the slider 32% of the time. He mixed in six changeups (all to lefties, per the usual) and two curveballs (also to lefties).

Strider was removed at 75 pitches on the dot in the middle of an at-bat. Strider was also working with big-league battery-mate Sean Murphy behind the plate. Murphy is also completing a rehab assignment after being hit by a pitch that broke a rib during spring training.

The Braves are coming off of an impressive 10-0 home opener over the Marlins and hope to build momentum as Strider and Murphy work toward their returns later this month. Then, they just await the return of the MVP, Ronald Acuna Jr., potentially in May.

Alex Verdugo went 0-2 and has yet to collect his first hit with Gwinnett. Sean Murphy went 0-3 and is hitting .200 with one homer for Gwinnett in 10 ABs. Veteran Garrett Cooper got his second and third hits of the season. Cooper contributed a clutch 10th-inning RBI single to tie the game 1-1 after the Sounds scored in the top half of the 10th.

Jesse Chavez appeared in the game after re-signing with the Braves for a second time this season. He pitched one clean inning with two strikeouts.

The Stripers won in the bottom of the 11th inning on an errant pickoff attempt at second base that allowed Luke Williams to score the walk-off run.

Gwinnett moved to 3-4 on the year with a 2-1 victory over Nashville.

Gwinnett moved to 1-3 in the young season. Today, the Stripers send Nathan Wiles to the mound to face the Nashville Sounds and Deivi Garcia at 11:05 AM EST.
