What does it mean when a baseball player is non-tendered?
Teams can choose to non-tender or not offer a contract to a player after the season is over. This applies to players with fewer than six years of service time under their belts. There are two reasons to non-tender a player, allowing them to become a free agent.
- The team simply wants to clear a roster spot, even though the player is not due a raise through aribtration.
- When a player is arbitration eligible, a team can choose not to tender the player a contract when the team believes a player will be awarded more money than they want to pay. For example, Nicky Lopez was projected to earn around $4 million in arbitration prior to the 2024 season. The Braves decided that price tag would be too high and Nicky Lopez was tenderly non-tendered.
