The Atlanta Braves optioned Allan Winans after his first start covering Spencer Strider‘s rotation spot went awry. Winans gave up six earned runs in five innings in a loss to the Mets. He was quickly optioned back to Gwinnett in favor of Darius Vines.

Darius Vines got the start tonight and gave the Braves a reliable performance. He held the Astros to just one run over 4.2 innings pitched with four strikeouts (hitting the over). Vines did give up four hits and three walks to the Astros, but was able to limit the damage.

In the first, Kyle Tucker walked and stole second. Tucker scored on an Alex Bregman single. That would be the only run Vines allowed. Vines allowed his second walk in the first inning to Yainer Diaz before getting Chas McCormick to fly out to centerfield.

Vines walked his third batter of the game in the second inning but would settle in from there. After his third walk in the second inning, Vines set down six in a row. He got his first strikeout in the fourth inning and finished with three in 4.2 innings. Snit didn’t want to overexpose him. The Braves were more than happy to hand the game over to the bullpen with just one run over 4.2 innings.

Vines battled tonight despite giving up four hits, three walks, and seven of his 12 balls in play being hit 95 mph or more. We’ll see if he earned another shot next time around the rotation or if they are waiting for Bryce Elder‘s schedule to line up more comfortably.
