Comparing David Fletcher’s and Orlando Arcia’s offensive numbers

OPS is your OBP and SLG added together. Fletcher has a .359 SLG over his six-year career. Since 2018, of players with at least 2,000 PAs, Fletcher has the fifth-worst SLG in all of baseball. That’s fifth-worst out of 155 players. Can you guess what Arcia’s career slugging percentage is? .379. Fletcher’s career .682 OPS has Arcia bested by three points. Would you have guessed Arcia had a lower OPS than Fletcher?

Last season, Arcia got off to hot start. He entered 2023 with a 75 OPS+. That was actually boosted up from the 67 games he logged in Atlanta in 2022. That was the first season Arcia has even had an OPS+ over 100 (102). He was able to maintain that sort of production over the course of 2023, finishing with a 98 OPS+.

Arcia struggled to end the season. In August, he hit .235 with a .300 OBP. He followed that up by hitting .200 in September with a .260 OBP and a .316 SLG. If Arcia comes back down to earth, David Fletcher is a very suitable option to get a crack at the job.

The thing is, Arcia is trending the right direction over the past two year while Fletcher’s modest contract was deemed as dead weight to the Angels. It’s not a bad situation to be in for the Braves. Two good defensive shortstops with the ability to contribute with the bat in different ways. It’s funny, both guys average 38 extra-base hits per 162 games. They just get there in different ways.

Do you think David Fletcher has a chance at taking the job in 2024?
