The Atlanta Braves currently have several holes in their Major League rotation. With Chris Sale and Spencer Schwellenbach joining Reynaldo Lopez and AJ Smith-Shawver on the IL, the Braves are now forced to trot out Bryce Elder, 20-year-old Didier Fuentes, and, currently, they have a bullpen day in the fifth spot.
Spencer Strider and Grant Holmes are the only quality Major League arms in their rotation. The Braves are 2-9 in their past 11 games, and their hopes of a Postseason run are fading.
On our most recent podcast, Alan Carpenter projected that many names could pop in and out of the Major League roster as the Braves try to piece together the remainder of the season.
So, we looked at the AAA-Gwinnett Stripers’ roster, and three guys stand out right now.
Nathan Wiles
We’ve already talked about the success Nathan Wiles is having in 2025 with Gwinnett. Nathan Wiles leads Gwinnett in innings pitched and has started 15 games for the Stripers. He has one fewer start than Hurston Waldrep, but has 7.1 more innings pitched than the highly-touted Waldrep. Wiles has a 1.20 WHIP to go with a 3.33 ERA this year.
The 6’4″, 228-pound right-hander was a pre-season acquisition in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays. Wiles has already been optioned once this year, so it’s an option year for him. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Braves called the 27-year-old up to see if his success rolls over to the big leagues.
Davis Daniel
Davis Daniel has a 3.52 ERA over 14 starts and 76.2 innings pitched for Gwinnett. The 28-year-old right-hander has 60 strikeouts and 44 walks with a 1.25 WHIP. Opponents are hitting .228 against him. Daniel was traded from the Angels on December 20, 2024. The Braves called him up for one day on April 27.
In Daniel’s last start on April 9th at Norfolk, he went six innings, allowing just one hit and no earned runs with six strikeouts. Davis does have 43.2 big-league innings under his belt, including one clean inning with Atlanta this season.
Jackson Stephens
Our old friend Jackson Stephens‘ last three outings have been as a starting pitcher. He has gone at least five innings in each start and has only allowed two runs. Stephens has a 1.13 WHIP this year to go with his 2.94 ERA over 33.2 innings.
Stephens has racked up 132.1 big league innings throughout his career, posting a 4.15 ERA. He has pitched 69.0 innings with Atlanta and posted a 3.52 ERA. Stephens has only made one start with the Braves since 2022. However, he’s stretched out and dominating in Gwinnett.
Conclusion
Who do you think the Atlanta Braves will call up to help eat innings for the rest of the season? Let us know in the comments.
