The Atlanta Braves are coming off two straight series wins, albeit they are subsequent to six straight series losses. However, the Braves have undoubtedly been producing better results as of late.
The Braves are 4-6 in their last 10, but they are 4-2 in their past six. The Mets are in first place in the NL East with a 45-27 record, and the Braves are in third place with a 31-39 record.
The Mets are 6-4 in their past 10 games but are traveling to Atlanta after being swept by the red-hot Tampa Bay Rays in New York.
The Braves are not out of the Postseason race yet, despite all the naysaying online. Last year, the Mets found themselves in a very similar situation as the Braves and they still made it to the Postseason.
The Braves are about to begin a stretch of 13-straight intra-divisional games with seven of them versus the Mets. This is the stretch for the Braves to do some damage to their own division. This could be the beginning of a stretch that dictates whether the Braves end up selling or buying at the deadline.
This is crucial.
The Mets have been bitten by the injury bug, with names like Sean Manea, Mark Vientos, Jesse Winker, A.J. Minter, Jose Siri, and Frankie Montas on the IL. They just added their ace Kodai Senga to the pile. He was scheduled to go in Game 2 of the upcoming series against the Braves. Now, he will miss at least both sets of the vital matchups with Atlanta.
Meanwhile, the Braves saw Spencer Strider finally look like Spencer Strider in his last start against the Rockies. The velocity came back, and he struck out 13 over six scoreless innings. His average four-seam fastball velocity registered at 96.2 mph and maxed out at 98.1 mph.
Mets vs. Braves Game 1 Matchup
David Peterson takes the mound for the Mets with a fantastic 2.49 ERA and a 5-2 record. The lefty has been tough to hit this season. Atlanta is not hitting lefties well with a triple slash line of .221/.289/.373.
Atlanta will send Spencer Schwellenbach to the mound with a 3.11 ERA. This pitching matchup looks tight on paper.
The Atlanta Braves have three players who have great track records against David Peterson. Coincidentally, all three guys are studs who are swinging the bats well right now.
Ronald Acuna Jr. has a .435 OBP with a .500 SLG off Peterson in 18 at-bats. Matt Olson has four homers in 16 at-bats off of Peterson. Austin Riley has a .391 average in 23 at-bats off the lefty with a .462 OBP.
Wild Card: Ozzie Albies has traditionally been a lefty-killer. Ozzie has a lower OPS (.590) off lefties than vs. righties (.641) in 2025. Albies has yet to homer off of a lefty in 2025. Could tonight be the night? Ozzie needs to get it going!
Mets vs. Braves Game 2 Matchup
This was supposed to be Chris Sale and Kodai Senga, but now it’s Chris Sale and Paul Blackburn.
Blackburn has a 4.89 career ERA and has allowed seven earned runs in 9.1 innings for the Mets. Meanwhile, Chris Sale is angling toward a second-straight Cy Young Award. Collectively, Atlanta hitters are slashing .318/.375/.455 off of Blackburn over their careers.
Mets vs. Braves Game 3 Matchup
Clay Holmes has converted from reliever to starter with stellar results. He leads the Mets in wins with a 7-3 record. Holmes has posted a 2.87 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP in his first shot as a regular starter. The Mets took a gamble on converting a high-octane reliever from free agency into a starter like the Braves did the previous year with Reynaldo Lopez. So far, it has provided similar results.
The league has a .299 OBP against Holmes this year but the Braves hitters have a .435 career OBP vs. Holmes. Holmes will need to be on top of his game in Atlanta because on the other side of things, the Braves send Spencer Strider to the mound to plant the flag on the three-headed monster. Strider’s return to form instantly makes the Braves a terrifying matchup over any three-game set. The three S’s (Sale, Strider, and Schwellenbach) strike fear into opposing managers and makes their hands too shaky to write out the lineup cards.
How do you think the Braves will perform in this crucial series against their division rivals? Let us know in the comments!
